Policies and practice

All systems are underpinned by policies and practice. This section contains examples of policy practice and thinking driving those practices.

	Title: Focus on PICU FINAL Published: February 2008 Summary: Focus on: Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs). This document is one of a series of documents produced by the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement as part of their High Volume Care programme Produced by the Delivering Quality and Value Team, the aim of the Focus on series is to help local health communities and organisations improve the quality and value of the care they deliver.
	Title: Refocusing the care programme approach final Published: March 2008 Summary: Refocusing the Care Programme Approach - Policy and Positive Practice Guidance. Following the national consultation, Reviewing the Care programme Approach (CPA), and having considered the issues identified, this guidance updates policy and sets out positive practice guidance for trusts and commissioners to review local practice to refocus CPA within mental health services.

	Title: Privacy and Dignity - the elimination of mixed sex accommodation Published: 2008 Summary: Privacy and Dignity - The elimination of mixed sex accommodation. Good Practice Guidance and Self Assessment Checklist. This guidance outlines 11 key principles to support the achievement of good physical separation of the sexes in hospital accommodation. It includes a self-assessment checklist to help trusts identify issues that need to be addressed. The document builds on the recent Department of Health report ‘Privacy and Dignity – a report by the Chief Nursing Officer into mixed sex accommodation in hospitals’ (DoH 2007).
	Title: Framework for Human Rights Local Action Published: March 2007 Summary: Human Rights in Healthcare – A Framework for Local Action. Department of Health, the British Institute of Human Rights and 5 NHS Trusts have worked in conjunction to produce this framework to assist NHS trusts to develop and apply human rights based approaches (HRBAs) in their organisations to improve service design and delivery.
	Title: Study into conflict and containment Published: November 2007 Summary: A longitudinal study of conflict and containment on acute psychiatric wards - Report to the DH Policy Research Programme. The aims of this study were to assess the relationship between nurses' positive appreciation of patients, nurses' emotional self regulation, the effective structuring of the ward's rules and routine, and rates of conflict and containment.
	Title: DH_Managing_risk Published: June 2007 Summary: This framework is a guide for mental health professionals working with service users to assess risk. It underpins risk assessment with principles of good practice for all mental health settings and provides a list of tools offering structure to risk management.

	Title: Antenatal & postnatal NICE Published: July 2006 Summary: This guideline makes recommendations for the prediction and detection, and treatment and management of mental disorder in women during pregnancy and the postnatal period. It includes advice on the care of women with existing mental disorder who are planning a pregnancy, and advice on the configuration of mental health services.
	Title: NICE Bipolar guidelines Published: July 2006 Summary: Bipolar disorder: The management of bipolar disorder in adults, children and adolescents, in primary and secondary care.
	Title: Protocol for service provision of LD patients Published: June 2006 Summary: Protocol for service provision of learning disabilities patients with mental health problems. This protocol has been developed for Dorset HealthCare NHS Trust via a Steering Group with clinical and managerial membership made up of the Adult Mental Health Services, Learning Disability Service and representation from the Borough of Poole Social Services, Bournemouth Borough Council and Dorset County Council.
	Title: Choosing Health Through Pharmacies Published: April 2005 Summary: A resource for pharmacists, PCTs, NHS Trusts and public health organisations to help maximise the contribution of pharmacists, their staff and the premises in which they work to improve health and reduce inequalities. It provides examples of innovative practice.
	Title: Assertive outreach service rural operational policy Published: April 2005 Summary: Assertive outreach (rural) operations policy. This Service will aim to provide safe, sound and supportive help that will enhance recovery, reduce social disability, increase social inclusion and decrease stigma.
	Title: Discharge policy Published: February 2005 Summary: Discharge planning policy and procedure (for in-patients not on ICPA). This document incorporates the good practice discharge procedures for all services, however for Mental Health Services the Care Programme Approach Policy is the key working document for discharge.
	Title: Clinical risk policy Published: September 2005 Summary: Clinical Risk Policy. Protecting patients and others from harm and abuse is a key priority for mental health services. This policy has been written to support staff in the assessment and management of clinical risk.

This Operational Policy provides the framework for the Early Intervention in Psychosis Service (EIS) and translates the requirements of National Mental Health Policy into practice.
